Bavarian Metal and Electrical Industry (M+E) Exports 2024
Bavarian exports of M+E products totaled 150.0 billion euros in 2024. That was two thirds of all Bavaria's exports. While total Bavarian exports stagnated compared to the previous year, M+E exports fell by 2.8 percent.
Development by country
The USA was once again the largest export market for Bavarian M+E products in 2024. Bavaria's M+E exports to the United States totaled 23.3 billion euros or 15.6 percent of all M+E exports from the state. Compared to 2023, they increased slightly by 0.1 percent.
Bavaria's M+E exports to China, however, fell significantly by 11.7 percent to 13.2 billion euros. Nevertheless, China remained the second largest foreign market for the Bavarian M+E industry with a share of 8.8 percent. As in previous years, France (6.7 percent) and the UK (6.0 percent) follow in third and fourth place. A total of 43.8 percent of Bavarian M+E exports were delivered to all EU states. Compared to 2023, they fell by 3.7 percent. Exports to the Euro countries accounted for 30.3 percent of all M+E exports; they fell by a similar amount by 3.6 percent.
Development by product
Exports of passenger cars amounted to 41.4 billion euros in 2024, accounting for 27.6 percent of M+E exports. Trucks and buses accounted for 1.2 percent. Chassis, engines and automotive parts accounted for 8.5 percent of M+E exports. Bavarian passenger car exports increased by 3.7 percent compared to the previous year. In contrast, exports of motor vehicle parts fell by 11.0 percent. Exports of aircraft (and parts) increased by 18.0 percent. These accounted for 3.1 percent of all M+E exports.
Bavarian machines were exported to the value of 31.1 billion euros, which was 20.7 percent of M+E exports. Compared to 2023, they fell by 2.9 percent. Exports of agricultural machinery and machinery for the paper and printing industries fell at an above-average rate. In contrast, exports of construction machinery and machine tools increased.
Electrical and electronic products accounted for 28.5 percent of M+E exports (42.8 billion euros). Compared to the previous year, they fell by 5.9 percent. The decline in electricity generation and distribution equipment as well as electronic components was particularly sharp.
